Side effects of Lip Fillers

Here at Cosmetic Courses, we want to reassure patients considering lip filler and also provide practitioners with information and advice Lip Filler side effects.

An overview of Lip Filler

Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid which is a key molecule involved in the skin’s moisture. In Dermal fillers, this is suspended in a gel. They’re mainly used by practitioners to improve the appearance of wrinkles and replace the volume that has been lost due to the ageing process.

The Procedure

A topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) may be applied in advance to the area to be injected, minimising any discomfort from the injections. Using a very fine needle, a slow injection of filler is injected into the agreed area.  When treating the lip area, your lips are separated into two treatment areas – the vermillion borders and the main body of your lips. The vermillion border will give your lips definition; where as the main body will give your lips volume. This will be discussed with your practitioner beforehand so that you can gain the look that you want to achieve. Using a very fine needle, a slow injection of filler is placed into the lip to create the desired result. Sometimes a little massage is required but this depends on the depth and placement of the product we are using.

Lip Filler Side effects

As with any treatment, there are some risks and side effects, and not everyone will experience the same thing each time, but you need to be aware of them:

Bruising and bleeding

Depending on the type of person that you are, or are treating, there maybe some bruising, slight swelling and slight bleeding after the treatment has taken place. The swelling should subside within 24-48 hours but can last up to 2 weeks , and the bruising within 5 –10 days. The bleeding will be minor and will stop within a few minutes of treatment.

Lumps and bumps

Once you have had filler it is common for you to be able to feel the product particularly in the lip area and most noticeably on your first treatment. Filler can also sometimes rise to the surface and leave a few lumps and bumps a few days after treatment. Usually this will settle but if it doesn’t this can often be treated by gently massaging the area. However it is always best to speak with your practitioner before doing anything else.

Infection

If you are prone to cold sores and picking up infections quite quickly, having an injection to the area may trigger an attack. Keeping the lip area clean and using fresh clean towels can help to prevent an infection or cold sore from starting. If you have a cold sore or think one is on the way you should hold off from having any procedures until this has completely cleared. You should also discuss this with your practitioner as they may advise alternative treatments or products.

Correcting Difficulties Smiling After Azzalure

Question :

Dear Cosmetic Courses,

I attended your basic and advanced courses in 2005.

I recently treated a 37 year old lady using Azzalure 3 x 0.1ml (15iu in 0.1ml) bilaterally to her orbicularis occuli. I performed my usual technique, injecting into the sites I usually inject into, and making sure I did not inject too low down on orbicularis occuli.

She came for review 2 weeks later, complaining of a heaviness over her cheeks making smiling difficult, more so on the right side.

Could you advise on any intervention that may alleviate this?

I have heard of practitioners advising stimulating the muscle using an electric tooth brush?

Answer :

It does sound like some of the Azzalure may be affecting your patient’s Zygomaticus Major or Minor.

This would cause the symptoms which you describe and is usually caused by the lowest of your crows feet injections.

We have seen this once before and it was caused by Dysport- there is some evidence that Dysport and Azzalure may disperse more than Botox making side effects like these more likely.

Unfortunately, there may not be much you can now do to alleviate it other than being supportive.

The electrical toothbrush trick may work and is certainly worthwhile trying, to both muscles 3 times a day for 5 minutes.

Use Juvederm to Cut Down the Signs of Aging

Allergan, Inc.’s Botox®/Vistabel® Product Licenced for Glabellar Lines in France

The Agence Francaise de Securite Sanitaire des Produits de Sante (AFSSAPS) first approved Allergan, Inc.’s Botox® product, botulinum toxin type A, for treatment of glabellar lines in 2003. Allergan, Inc. markets its Botox® product in France under the product name Vistabel®, which was licenced for the same use in the U.K. in March 2006. At the time, France became the nineteenth country to licence Allergan, Inc.’s Botox® product.

Glabellar lines are the vertical frown lines between the eyes, generated by emotions of stress and anger. Over time, the lines can become permanent, giving a perpetual appearance of stress or anger. Botox® / Vistabel® relaxes the muscles causing frown lines, smoothing the skin between the eyebrows. It works by temporarily preventing facial nerve endings, which receive a signal from the brain to display a particular emotion, from releasing acetycholine. The temporary failed release lasts several months, preventing the nerve endings from controlling the facial muscles. The procedure is quick and easy, and minimally invasive, requiring only a few small injections into the skin. Results are nearly instantaneous.

The product has been proven safe and effective in clinical trials. More than eighty per cent of patients involved in the clinical studies saw the maximum effect from the drug. The side effects included headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop and nausea. Patients who experience any hypersensitivity to specific ingredients in the product should not receive Botox® / Vistabel® treatments. The product is available by prescription only, and Allergan, Inc. does recommend that Botox® / Vistabel® treatments be administered by a qualified and experienced physician who specializes in cosmetic treatments, and it should be administered in an appropriate medical facility.

Allergan manufactures its Botox® / Vistabel® product, generically called Clostridium botulinum type – A neurotoxin complex, from a naturally occurring protein called purified type – A neurotoxin, which is produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. The drug is now approved in more than seventy countries for a variety of uses beyond treatment of glabellar lines. The United Kingdom in particular has approved the product for treatment of blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, cervical dystonia, severe hyperhidrosis of the axillae, dynamic equines foot deformity in children with cerebral palsy, and for wrist and hand disability caused by adult stroke.
