We managed to catch up with our busy Clinical Lead Mel Recchia and ask her some of your most asked questions, starting with… “how do I treat Spock Brow?”

In this short video we see Consultant plastic Surgeon and Medical Director of Cosmetic Courses Adrian Richards answer the FAQ; “How do you decide which treatment is right for your patient?”

First time patients can hold a bit of confusion when it comes to the treatment they want. This can be created from a variety of sources, incorrect information in the media or general lack of understanding of each injectable and it’s qualities.

It is our role as the practitioner to guide our patients through this. Spend time talking to the patient on their consultation, understand the problem area and assess it. It’s also important to be honest with your patient, not too “salesy”, nobody wants a practitioner who over promises and under-delivers!

In our courses we teach you the correct treatment plans and problem areas which patients will come to you for help with. From your learning you will be able to decide the correct treatment for the patient in order to help them gain the result they are after.

The consultation is a very important part of the patient and practitioner journey. This is where you will form your relationship and the patient puts trust in you. Spend time talking to your patients and get to know them, understand why they’re coming for the treatment. What made them come for the treatment and what are they hoping from the treatment. It’s important you build a rapport with them in order to achieve repeat business and happy patients!

In this short video we see Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Medical Director of Cosmetic Courses Adrian Richards answer the FAQ; “where can I deliver Botox and Dermal Filler Treatments?”

Where can you deliver Botox & Dermal Filler treatments?

This is always a tricky one as there is no legislation about where treatments can be performed. We recommenced that practitioners keep in mind that they are using prescription only medicines such as Botulinum Toxin. As you are using these medicines the safest and most efficent way to administer them would be in a clinical environment.

It has been made aware in the industry that practitioners choose to practice in hotels, as part of parties or in their own homes. Whilst this may be convenient for the practitioner this can be seen as dangerous. Patients are found to also be more at ease while having such treatments done in a clinical environment. The equipment can also be located and stored correctly and the medicine can be kept at a stable temperature whilst in a clinic.

Another option for practitioners is salons, this has it’s advantages and disadvantages. Advantages are that there is often a well established clientèle and the salon provides rooms for you to rent resulting in no overheads. There are however a few issues in practicing in a salon and we talk about those in depth in the courses.

The ideal route for those practicing in aesthetics is to open up their own clinic or work within one. This means that you have everything you need around you, all your equipment is easily available to you and medicines can be stored stably to ensure patient safety.

At Cosmetic Courses we have had plenty of  success stories of delegates opening up their own clinics. One of which was two delegates who sat next to each other on the course and found out they actually lived very close to each other. From this realisation and shared passion in aesthetics they set up their own clinic which they jointly own.

The patients love it with its clinical feel and the delegates found they attracted business easily. Both practitioners share all costs of running the clinic and have gone on to be very successful.

In this short video we see Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Medical Director of Cosmetic Courses Adrian Richards address the FAQ; “how long after Botox treatment will my patient notice its effects?”

Set up in 2001 by RealSelf Top 100 Plastic Surgeon Mr Adrian Richards, Cosmetic Courses is one of the UK’s largest Botox training providers. With a diverse team of expert trainers boasting a combined 113 years of experience in the aesthetic industry and having trained and mentored over 4500 doctors, dentists and nurses we are well equipped to provide you with the knowledge, practical skills and business support to help you set up your own profitable aesthetic practice.

How long after Botox treatment will your patient notice an effect?

It’s important to understand that the effects of Botox injections are not seen immediately after treatment. So you need to do your markings and injections correctly as you will not be able to see the full effects of your treatment that day and be able to rectify any mistakes.

At Cosmetic Courses we teach you advanced techniques in this procedure. Including placing the Botox in subcutaneous tissue and leave small wields which dissipate in 5 to 10 minutes following treatment so by the time you patients walk out no one should be able to tell they’ve had botulinum toxin treatment.

Generally patients will notice a weakening of the muscle within the first week. In the cosmetic industry we like to under promise and over deliver, so we tell patients they should notice a weakening of muscle activity in a week to two weeks. Then if the muscle weakens a little but earlier they’re happy that it’s slightly earlier rather than slightly later.

Botulinum Toxin Results Timeline

Time after treatment | Expected effects

Day 1                                         | Some changes in feeling

Day 5                                         | Most patients will notice weakness

Day 7                                         | Effects will start to be seen

Day 10-14                                | Minimum effects will start to be seen

In this Video FAQ we answer “how do you treat a male forehead with Botox?” with Adrian Richards, Clinical Director of Cosmetic Courses…

Hopefully it won’t come as a surprise to you that men are different than women when it comes to the body.

Men have bigger muscles and generally they’re taller. The focus areas for the male forehead is the procerus, the corrugator, the frontalis and the obicularis oculi. These are also the areas that are treated with Botulinum Toxin. As they are larger in men you will need more botulinum toxin to treat. We recommend 30-40% more botulinum toxin in each area compared to a woman. This is just a guide as all bodies are made differently. It all depends on how much muscle they have in terms of how much Botox is administered.

For instance you could meet a female with a large muscle mass meaning she would need more than the average dose of Botox for her treatment to see results.

It all depends on the patient, each patient should be treated differently and it’s important you focus on what works for them personally. It is your job as the practitioner to ensure that you are giving the right doses to your patients. Not only is this safety of practice but will also ensure great results from treatment.
