Facial Fat Pads

In this video we take a deeper look into the anatomy of the face, focusing on the facial fat pads, including superficial compartments and deep compartments.

If you would like to learn more about skin anatomy click here!

Fat pads are thought to be present to facilitate the gliding of muscles in movement, whilst also protecting the sensitive facial muscles from injury. It is vital we understand the facial anatomy of fat pads when delivering dermal filler treatments.

The fat pads can be divided into superficial and deep compartments:

1. Superficial Compartments:

  • Found between the skin and the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS)
  • 10 areas to be aware of in this layer:
    – Central
    – Middle Forehead
    – Lateral Temporal-Cheek
    – Lateral Orbital
    – Superior Orbital
    – Inferior Orbital
    – Nasolabial
    – Middle Cheek
    – Jowl
    – Pre-Platysma Fat

2. Deep Compartments:

  • Found below the SMAS and behind the muscles
  • Offer volume and shape to the face
  • Areas to be aware of:
    – Retro-Orbicularis Oculi Fat
    – Lateral Sub-Orbicularis Oculi Fat
    – Medial Sub-Orbicularis Oculi Fat
    – Buccal Fat
    – Deep Medial Cheek Fat

How We Support Delegates

Missed our live with Clinical Lead of Cosmetic Courses Melanie Recchia discussing nurses into aesthetics? You can catch it here!

Find out more about nurses coming into aesthetics by clicking here.

Clinical Lead Mel Recchia hosted a free webinar where she discussed nurses into aesthetics, including available routes and advice to get you started.

Answering questions about a nurses journey within aesthetics, suitable for those wanting to dip their toes into the industry and even those who have started but are looking for support and advice.

Mel Recchia qualified as a Registered Nurse at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1997. Following qualification, she worked at Stoke Mandeville in the Burns unit, looking after burn injured patients and patients undergoing cosmetic surgery. She then went on to work in Accident and Emergency for 7 years. Before embarking on her nursing career, Mel worked as a Beauty Therapist in various clinics as well as running her own salon. Keen to share her knowledge and experience, she went on to pursue a Certificate in Education which enabled her to train others in beauty therapy.

Mel made the move into aesthetic nursing in 2007, managing 2 successful cosmetic & aesthetic clinics in Northamptonshire & Buckinghamshire and is committed to ongoing education for herself and others. Mel is fully registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and an active member of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN) where she has recently been invited to be a co-opted member of the board. She has also undertaken the V300 independent nurse prescribing course.

Mel’s passion for aesthetics has led her to become a valued member of the Allergan Faculty.

Her wealth of knowledge and experience makes her the perfect person to talk to when thinking about nurses into aesthetics.

Last week our Midlands Clinical Lead Dr Olha attended the biggest medical aesthetics event in Europe, IMCAS in Paris.

We are so thrilled and proud that she was invited not just as a visitor but as a speaker at this prestigious conference to share her knowledge and experience on the latest approach to lip augmentation and perioral treatments. imcas

Rachael Langford from Cosmetic Courses went along with Dr.Olha to support her at this event .

Dr Olha led an exciting and insightful presentation to a filled room whilst also inviting questions from the delegates for her to discuss with them.

Dr Olha and Rachael met some our existing UK partners: HA- derma , TSK labs, Teosyal, Allergan, whilst also attending lectures of other experts in the industry such as Dr Ahmed Abiba from Middle East, Dr Beartice Molina from the UK and Dr Konstantin from Kazaxstan

They also have discovered some new products and build some new contacts for some exciting projects in the future!

Overall the event was very impressive, professionally organised and a perfect location in the heart of Paris.

We are extremely proud of Dr Olha and our team as we once again demonstrate that leaders never stop learning.

Only by sharing our experience, techniques and learning from each other can we deliver the best possible results to our patients and best quality training to our delegates .

“Never stop learning and share your knowledge with the others” – Dr Olha

If you’re a nurse looking for the right Botox Courses for Nurses, why not complete your training with one of the UK’s longest-established course providers in medical aesthetics? Our Botox and Dermal Filler courses support you to develop your confidence and skills in an exciting, thriving industry.

Who Can Train?

Registered nurses and midwives are taking the leap and moving into medical aesthetics. Half of those who attend our Botox and Dermal Filler training programmes are nurses, and this is often due to the number of transferable skills you have to offer.

Non-prescribing nurses can also train in Botox, but you’ll require a doctor, dentist or nurse prescriber to provide your patient with a face to face consultation before you can administer anything. Therefore, you may like to eventually consider completing a Non-Medical prescribing (V300) course after gaining some experience in medical aesthetics. Alternatively, you could also train in other non-prescription treatments, such as Dermal Fillers, chemical peels or PRP.

The Benefits of Training in Aesthetics & Botox for Nurses

As a growing industry, medical aesthetics provides registered nurses and midwives with an opportunity to not only improve their earning potential but gain a better work-life balance. The red tape of working in the NHS often leads to reduced patient contact time and a lack of flexible hours. Medical aesthetics is a rewarding field to work in because it gives nurses greater control over the way they work and the standards of care they can provide.

Where to Start – What Botox Courses for Nurses We Offer

When considering the right Botox course for nurses, we recommend starting with either of the following two training programmes:

Foundation Botox and Dermal Filler Training

One of the most popular courses for nurses to start with is our Foundation Botox and Dermal Filler Training. This is our entry-level course which provides the basic knowledge you’ll need to practice in these treatments. Once more experienced, we have over 20 other training courses to help you move into more advanced areas.

Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine

You may also like to consider our Level 7 Certificate in Injectables, of which the foundation course forms the first part. It’s an Ofqual-accredited qualification covering 277 hours of learning time for more comprehensive training in Botox and Dermal Fillers.

Why Choose Cosmetic Courses?

  • As the current largest and longest-serving Botox course provider in the UK, we offer some of the highest-quality training you’ll find.
  • Many of our hand-picked team of expert trainers are nurses themselves, so will tailor the training around your experience and needs.
  • We offer a variety of training opportunities, including practical, hands-on experience with live models in a clinical environment.
  • All of our courses are CPD certified, allowing you to easily gain the right insurance to practice.

At the end of 2018 we introduced a brand new course to the Cosmetic Courses, Rederm- The Injectable Skincare. Offering the latest in skincare and injectables combined into a results driven anti-ageing treatment.

Redermalization ™ is a non-surgical procedure harnessing the power of Succinate and Hyaluronic acid. Both components are physiological (prevalent in human tissue) making the product hypoallergenic, safe and very effective. The product is injected to stimulate collagen & elastin and reject pigmentation to achieve youthful healthy looks without going under the knife.

Redermalization guarantees skin protection by minimizing damage from infammatory and oxidizing agents as well as preventing against chronic inflammation and slowing down endogenous protein destruction due to its high molecular mass of sodium hyaluronate (2.5 mln DA). Also correcting premature signs of ageing and helping to eliminate hyperpigmentation.

The treatment can be used in different ways to combat a variety of age related concerns:

  • Dark circles around the eyes
  • Crêpe like skin
  • Fine lines & wrinkles on the face, neck, and decolletage
  • Face & Body skin laxity
  • Skin hydration
  • Photo ageing
  • Treatment of scars and stretch marks

Ingredients:

  • Water
  • Sodium Hyaluronate
  • Sodium Succinate
  • Succinic Acid

What is the downtime after Rederm treatment?

Downtime varies between patients, on average this is 2-3 days, raised red bumps under the skin may be visible for up to 72 hours although this can be covered with makeup.

Where can Rederm treat?

Around the eyes, neck, full face, décolletage and backs of hand.

What is the differences between Rederm & Profilho?

Whilst both rejuvenating treatments, Rederm is injected to specific areas rather than fixed points. The ingredients also differ between products with Rederm using hyaluronic acid to boost results and succinic acid to help treat pigment.

How much is the cost of Rederm as a Cosmetic Courses model?

Around the eyes £125 per treatment or £300 for a course of 3. Face neck, décolletage and backs of hands £150 or £375 for a course of 3.

2018 Love Island contestant Alexandra Cane has made the headlines recently over her invasive skin treatment. Many of her 1.2M Instagram followers were shocked when she took to her Instagram stories to reveal the recovery process of the invasive procedure showing a red and “scabby” face. The reality star had chosen to undergo a Co2 Laser Facial after years of Impetigo, which had left scarring on her face.

Alexandra did not hide what she had done but instead decided to take her followers along with her throughout the process so they could understand why she had the procedure, what the procedure is and the downtime that comes with it along with the fantastic results at the end.

During mid recovery she said “This is the current state of my skin, it looks quite bloody. It’s starting to scab over now but all is good according to my consultant. Hopefully in a few days all of this scabbing should start peeling off. The sorest part is my eyes, but the rest of my skin feels pretty good” adding “This is how my skin is meant to look at the moment, please don’t worry, all is fine.”

So, what is the Co2 Laser Facial?

Co2 Laser Facial is an advanced, results driven skin rejuvenation treatment which treats skin problems such as fine lines, pigmentation and acne scarring through laser resurfacing.

The laser beams target the problem area causing trauma to the skin which stimulates the body’s own healing process in turn producing a natural source of collagen resulting in refreshed, glowing skin. With the problems areas minimised if not completely eradicated. A topical numbing cream is applied to the area of treatment and once the skin is numbed the lasers use beams of thermal energy to penetrate deep into the skin treating skin conditions which over the counter creams can’t.

The treatment costs around £3000 to receive and should only be administered by a trained professional due to its intensity along with the prolonged aftercare requirements.

Other alternatives to laser resurfacing?

As the laser treatment carries quite a big price tag there are alternative less invasive treatments which patients may prefer:

Chemical Skin Peel – A chemical skin peel is a clinical grade skin rejuvenating treatment used to target a number of skin conditions such as black head removal, oil congestion, dry, flaky skin, dull, dehydrated skin & pigmentation
If you just want a rejuvenating and anti-ageing effect then this will be a perfect treatment. The Neostrata skin peel works by penetrating into the epidermis reaching a deeper point than any home skincare products. This coupled with the microdermabrasion treatment unblocks pores leaving you with immediately clearer and brighter skin.
Cosmetic Courses price for treatment: £70 per treatment

Microneedling – If you suffer from fine lines, acne scarring or pigmentation then you may benefit from a Microneedling treatment. Using tiny needles on a roller or an electronic device over the skin causing pin point bleeding is creating on the skin. This ‘trauma’ causes stimulation of your natural collagen which will refresh and rejuvenate the appearance of your skin. Again patients will experience best results with a course of treatment and skincare.

“I need Botox, I look too old”

Did you know that sometimes it’s not the one treatment that can help you reach the ideal look you are looking for; a combination of treatments can achieve fantastic results instead. The ageing face unfortunately does not stay to one area; it affects the whole surface in different ways.

By using a combination of treatments and having a holistic approach to the face, the practitioner can address all of these areas which together will give a fantastic youthful effect.

For example, “I look too old”. Botox injections can relax the muscles on the forehead to help to avoid any unwanted wrinkles, but if we were also to include dermal filler injections on the lower part of the face, around the mouth and/or jaw and cheek we will be lifting the face up resulting in a youthful glow.

beauty triangle

In medical terms, beauty is described by a triangle. An upside down triangle represents the perfect proportions that we have when we are younger, as we grow older the triangle then flips.  Volume loss and Muscular Hyperactivity are two major components of the ageing process that together contribute to the formation of wrinkles.

By just adding Botox injections to the upper face we will not be focusing on the face as whole, which will not provide the maximum results achievable.

Combination Appointment at Cosmetic Courses

At Cosmetic Courses we have a thorough understanding of the ageing process, it’s what we teach our delegates in our courses.

We want you to get the most out of your appointments with us which is why we have developed our combination days. Not only does it teach our delegates how to understand the face as a whole but it also leaves you walking out the door with a natural balanced result!

On our combination days we cover all facial Botox & dermal filler injections, these appointments are available in our Buckinghamshire & Nottingham clinic.

Treatments included:

  • Upper Face Botox
  • Lower Face Botox
  • Filler around the Mouth
  • Lip Filler
  • Cheek Filler
  • Jaw Filler

Patient review from combination appointments:

“Ruth and the lady that she was training today corrected my lip and cheek fillers and both have an amazing aesthetic eye for their work, taking time to talk me through what they were doing and showing me the results every step of the way. Once finished, I was given the mirror again and I cried. TEARS OF JOY! I can’t thank Ruth enough for the amazing results.”

Menopausal? Peri Menopausal? Over 40?

October 18th is World Menopause Day created by the International Menopause Society (IMS), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), focusing on all areas of menopause, from hot flashes to heart health. The IMS is the first menopause society in the world, founded in 1978 with the mission of addressing gender-based and menopause-based issues, which, as it states on their website, “until then had not been regarded as important.”

If you are of a certain age you may have already noticed age related hormonal changes in your body. From a change in your periods to your intimate health, your moods, your body temperature, odour and your general well-being all affected.

The drop in our oestrogen levels are the major cause of our symptoms and most of these we deal with in private however one of the major effects is written all over our face and that is the changes in our skin condition.

Treatments to help

Dry Skin, oily skin, adult acne, sagging, wrinkles, dehydrated skin, uneven skin tone and texture, loss of elasticity and degradation of collagen are the changes we will start to notice as we progress through life. Most of these changes are permanent and irreversible however they can be improved with aesthetic intervention.

Xela Rederm addresses many of the issues that appear due to the drop in our oestrogen levels.  It is injectable skin care of the highest quality. It hydrates, brightens and stimulates the production of collagen so you get glowing, bouncier skin. It speeds up the metabolism of the skin and prevents the build-up of free radicals that can lead to a further destruction of our collagen and elastin. All in all it is a game changer for skin that is changing due to our hormones.

You need a course of three treatments 2 weeks apart for the full effect then you can have your skin care injected as and when you feel the need for a boost.

To book or find out more about this treatment please contact the team on 01844 390110 / [email protected]

We are excited to launch our two brand new skin courses: Rederm – The Injectable Skincare and Microneedling

Rederm – The Injectable Skincare

By using high molecular weight non-cross linked hyaluronic acid combined with succinic acid, Hyalual have created a unique product that has many positive physiological benefits for tissue and skin health.

This half day hands-on course focuses on the benefits of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid over low molecular weight and the positive effect it has on skin quality when combined with succinic acid.

We will look at treating areas that are usually very difficult to treat such as under the eye where the skin is thin, dehydrated and of poor structure, full face, neck and décolletage for skin rejuvenation and lifting and discuss other areas where Rederm is be used effectively.

Rederm hydrates, stimulates collagen and elastin, aids the conversion of glucose to ATP and significantly improves pigmentation.

Collagen P.I.N.

Cosmetic Courses is proud to offer the Collagen P.I.N. to its list of skin courses. This hands on course will demonstrate the latest in skin rejuvenation, giving enough practical and theory to integrate this unique procedure into your aesthetic clinic.

collagen pin

The Collagen P.I.N. (Percutaneous Induction Needling) is an automated micro-needling device used to produce controlled wounds on the skin. This process activates the bodies own healing mechanism releasing growth factors as well as the patients natural collagen and elastin, resulting in the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing.

The Collagen P.I.N. represents an evolution of the micro-needling process, with three times more needles than many other devices currently on the market. This procedure also causes less damage to the visible outer layer of the skin than traditional dermaroller micro-needling, proving quicker healing times and faster results.

As our wardrobes change through the seasons, it’s important we do the same with our skincare routines. Different products and treatments help protect the skin for different climates and conditions. We asked Cosmetic Courses expert skin trainer Fleur to share her top skincare saviours in the Summer!

pigment controller

For Hyperpigmentation

All skin types are different and it’s important to work to your own type. For people prone to hyperpigmentation we recommend a product with a tyrannise inhibitor in, this helps slow down the melanocytes over producing the melanin which cause the darker unsightly brown patches on our skin. Fleur recommends NeoStrata Pigment Controller to help with this.

For all skin types

For all skin types we recommend a lighter based moisturiser in the summer than winter as our skin tends to be a little more hydrated due to the weather but shine can build up throughout the day. So ideally a light hydrating moisturiser will work best and ensuring you skin feels and looks its best in the Summer seasons!

sheer hydration

Fleur recommends NeoStrata Sheer Hydration for this. The oil-free daily hydrator also contains SPF 35 to help protect the skin from rays whilst helping control and reduce oiliness.

  • Helps control and reduce oiliness
  • NeoGlucosamine is clinically proven to help reduce the appearance of dark spots
  • Evens skin tone and improves skin firmness
  • Provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection

For UV protection

SPF is very important for everybody’s skincare routine and should be used all year round to help prevent harmful UV rays causing photo-ageing. Fleur recommends Heliocare which provides advanced anti-ageing UV protection. Combining high technology mineral & non mineral filters with photobiological protectants.heliocare-advanced-spf-50-gel-50ml-c94A UV protection that goes way beyond traditional sunscreens by providing four advanced levels of protection:
• activating the skin’s immune defences before, during and after sun exposure
• inhibiting DNA damage in skin cells which can lead to cancer
• helping to prevent structural changes in the skin and slowing the ageing process
• reducing sun-induced allergic skin reactions
